How many CLE hours are required if I am an experienced attorney?

Experienced attorneys must complete a total of 24 accredited CLE credit hours during each biennial reporting cycle, including at least 4 credit hours of Ethics and Professionalism, 1 credit of Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection, and 1 credit of Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias.

How many CLE hours can an experienced attorney take through Attorney Credits?

All 24 credit hours can be taken online.

New Cybersecurity Requirement

New York's cybersecurity requirement starts for any attorney re-registering after July 1, 2023 and new attorneys admitted on or after July 1, 2023. The new CLE requirement requires attorneys to complete at least one credit hour of cybersecurity, privacy and data protection each compliance cycle. New admitted attorneys can complete the requirement in either year one or year two.

How many CLE hours are required if I am a newly admitted attorney?

Newly admitted attorneys must complete a total of 16 credit hours in the following areas in EACH of their first 2 transitional years for a total of 32 hours. The requirements each year are:
Ethics and Professionalism - 3 hours
Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection - 1
Skills - 6 hours
Law Practice Management and/or Areas of Professional Practice - 6 hours
The first set of 16 transitional CLE credits must be completed by the first anniversary of admission to the Bar. The second set of 16 transitional CLE credits must be completed between the first and second anniversaries.

How many CLE hours can a newly admitted attorney take through Attorney Credits?

A maximum of 7 hours in the areas of Law Practice Management & Areas of Professional Practice in each transitional year, for a total of 14 hours over 2 years. Newly admitted attorneys can NOT take the Ethics and Professionalism or Skills requirement online through our site. What if I was practicing law in another state before I was admitted to New York?

If you were practicing law in another state, DC, a US territory or foreign jurisdiction, for at least five of the seven years immediately preceding admission to NY, you will NOT be deemed a newly admitted attorney for CLE purposes, and you must comply with the CLE requirement for experienced attorneys.

How do Attorney Credits' CLE courses qualify for credit in New York?

What are my CLE compliance and reporting requirements as an experienced attorney?

Reporting Cycle: 2 years
Compliance Deadline: Birth date
Reporting Deadline: 30 days after your birthday

Admitted BEFORE 1/1/82 OR in an even-numbered year - register in EVEN-numbered years.

Admitted in an odd-numbered year AFTER 1982 - register in ODD-numbered years.

Can experienced attorneys carry hours forward to the next year?

A maximum of 6 additional credits earned may be applied towards the next biennial reporting cycle. Experienced attorneys can also carry over Ethics and Professionalism credits.

Does Attorney Credits verify my completion?

Yes, under the New York CLE Requirements we must monitor your course attendance and completion. For online streaming courses, there will be randomly inserted prompts that appear on the video screen that display a five digit number code. You must type this number code on your keyboard while you are watching the video to confirm that you are engaged in the course. For downloadable and CD CLE courses we have embedded numeric codes in the courses. You must write these number codes down and then enter them on our website after you complete the course to obtain your course certificate. Please note that the date you enter the codes and get the certificate is the date that will be printed on the certificate.

Does Attorney Credits report my CLE hours to the New York CLE Board?

No. Attorney Credits does not report your completed courses to the New York CLE Board. New York is a self reporting CLE state. We do maintain a record of all your completed courses and you can access your certificates of completion at anytime from our website.

How do I report the completion of my NY CLE requirement at the end of my compliance period?

New York attorneys must self report their compliance. New York attorneys must self report their compliance. You will receive an attorney registration form by mail or email, and you must file your attorney registration form and indicate that you have completed your New York CLE requirement within 30 days after your birthday on alternate years.
